Kleva Sharp - fact or fiction?

I'm almost 99% sure that this may help knives that are in an interesting limbo of sharpness but there is no way that this could sharpen to a standard that and knife enthusiast would be happy with.

these knife sharpener are excellent. my husband bought one from the tv and he got it in two days and it works just like they say on the commercial. i am getting some for birthday presents they are giving away a free grater with it at klevasharp website

Well that sounds cool! You would make a really good marketing person you know? You mentioned it's on TV - 1 point. You stated that delivery was quick - another point. And it works like advertised! I'm giving you 2 points for that one. I'd almost think you were using the handbook if you had mentioned that you were going to buy more from their website where they are giving away free... oh wait...

Sorry. I'm feeling a bit cynical this decade.

I received the klevasharp today in the mail and was disappointed with it. I tried scissors and it made them blunter. I tried an old knife and it did not slice through pumpkin with ease.

I'm not really surprised that it did not work. Sharpening a knife is an art form that requires patients and skill. I've chucked some serious knife sharpening vids here

losers took my money through paypal then tell me they are having trouble finding my purchase order, 2 weeks later the idiots STILL can't find it

Let us know if they ever sort it out for you.

I`m a little disapointed with the comments here...
Does this knife sharpener work or not??

Admiral Stupid said...

I haven't personally tried it but am assuming that if your knife was in a average reasonable condition it could keep it that way. If your knives are properly sharpened though, it would ruin the edge without a doubt. Knife enthusiasts steer clear, weekend choppers could find some value from this product for sure.

Just bought one two days ago on a spur of the moment decision after running into one of those display salesmen in my local shopping centre - verdict: ITS GREAT!! So answer is yes, it works. I haven't seen the tv commercial so I wouldn't know what it claims to do, but my experience is very positive, its quick and easy to use, better than a shaprening stone. Ive already sharpened all my
Knives and am wishing that I had more blunt ones to sharpen.

Admiral Stupid said...

What condition were your knives in before you used it? Had you ever sharpened them properly before?

Hi - Bought a Kleva sharpener last week. It works very well and sharpening a knife has now become an enjoyable experience. The commercial lives up to it's promises.

I hope knife sharpening does not in fact require patients but lots of patience... patients have their own health issues without having knives sharpened on them!!!

Good spotting Anonymous! Of the trillions upon trillions of words on the internet, you found the one that was wrong! There should be some sort of prize for that. It is its own reward I guess for a life well spent. Kudos to you.

All the comments or shall I say negative reviews are good and I am happy because I was going to buy one. But like my father always taught me if you have something negative to say about something then you must also have a solution.

So Taking all this on board does anyone have a solution? Something better but in the cheap range or not to expensive.

The kleva sharp is amazing. I sell them and the feed back is always positive

I bought one today at a foodie fair and, honestly, it's pretty good!
I've been using a whetstone with limited success. I don't think I possess the coordination required for the task. But I used this device and it actually worked exactly as it says on the box... well... almost. It took a couple of pulls through to get it done, not one like they say, but it got there. Even the guy who sold it to me said it takes more than one go and that the ad lies.
I think it's a bit agressive though. The amount of shavings left behind was a bit scary. You wouldn't want to use it frequently or you'd have no knife left. But used sparingly, and finished off on a good knife steel, it's better than I was achieving otherwise.

On 27/10/2012 I ordered and paid for a KLEVA Sharp sharpener via the internet.
KLEVA confirmed the order via the internet with an order number.
On 07/11/2012 I phoned KLEVA to find out when delivery of the item would take place.
I was informed that I needed to advise them that the money had been paid into their account and that these instructions were on the invoice.
On closer examination I did not find any instructions to do so.
This afternoon I received an e-mail saying that the order was "completed".
I am still waiting for the item to be delivered!!!!
Be very wairy of these merchants!!!

Very happy with the Kelva Sharp, with steeling it produces and edge that is acceptable for kitchen knives. I am buying them a christmas presents just so I don't have to use blunt knives at freinds' houses.

The one stroke wonder in the advertisements is bs. That said it does work quickly with little skill. Just make sure you don't push to hard as the blade will chatter and cut divets into your knife.

I use it as a coarse starting point, as it cuts down subsequent honing time on the stones.

My system for X50CRMOV15 German knives is as follows (softer steels need far less work):

1) 3-10 strokes on the Kelva Sharp (depending on the condition of the blade
2) 10 strokes on a sharpening steel to remove the large burrs that are left from using the Kelva Sharp
2) 3 X 10 strokes on each side on a Spyderco fine stone
3) 3 X 10 strokes on each side on a Spyderco super fine stone
4) 20-40 strokes on a textured razor strop using jewellers rouge
5) 20-40 strokes on a smooth razor strop

You end up with a polished razor edge that is crazy sharp.

Is this overkill? You bet.

Nice work iotasin. Way to use the tools at your disposal!

Here is a sharpening system that really works. More expensive but a great result. It's used by 100% of the professional knife makers that I know.

Hey admiral stupid, knife sharpenings not rocket science. You make it sound like you need a degree to sharpen a knife! The whole point of the klevasharp is that it saves time. If you lose an edge, one swipe and it's back again.

Anonymous said...

Well I have one and its the best thing since sliced bread, who ever says that it doesnt work well your not doing it right. All my knives are sharp enough to slice paper not to mention the nail on my index finger so everyone make sure you have an edge on your knife before you start thats my advice otherwise your pushing s*** up hill.

If you're just sharpening kitchen knives, then get a knife steel. They're a bit of a pain to find in Australia in my experience but I found one for the not unreasonable sum of $50 at a homeware store. Definitely not rocket science to use, but it takes a little time (not much) to get comfortable using them efficiently. Look it up on YouTube how to use one properly, but it's not hard and is what chefs use for their knives.

Best of luck. Don't buy a klevasharp that guy on tv freaks me out.

I just bought one at the CNE for $24 with the free rasp. Both work great. Knives I was going to throw away are sharp again. Scissors require some tutoring to do but work great also. Definitely worth the money.

I bought it today in a Chinese store and let me tell you it WORKS perfectly.

Admiral Stupid - I have a Lansky knife sharpning system that works great but just like the Wicked Edge system it takes time to use and set up. That is why I bought the Kleva sharp for my 80 year old mother, it is something she can use and it really gives a good result. Yeh I know it takes to much meat of but at least she has sharp knives

I have had this sharpner for over a year now, and I just love it! being a chef I need a sharp edge. It does take a lot of steel from the knife, but it keeps the edge sharp as a blade. I would definitely recommend it for maintaining your knives edge, but you will still need to get your knives sharpened professionly once a year or so (depending on how much you use them).

Quick easy and works well. Not a solution for the purist. That was me but who has the time it takes to expertly sharpen a blunt knife? Great think to pack when you visit friends. 2 mins and you will have at least one of their knives sharp.
If you have a hangup about tungsten sharpeners, don't buy it. If you want a quick fix when some idiot cuts your good chef knife onto a plate the might get you going fast.
I give it 8.5/10 with some provisos. It won't fix a really bad knife easily.

I bought this gizmo at a camping/caravan show. 8mth on it does work and works pretty well. And no, sharpening knives is not an art. It is a skill but not an art. sharpening knives as an art form is just a BS as hair or nail artist or architects and the rest of that silly bimbo crap.

Sure there are $2.02c craps to but that's not the point.

The sharpener Kleva Sharp works.

These sharpeners ( I use the word loosly)will work in a fashion what they do is tear off the folded over sharp edge so you have a new edge.
Useing a steel stands that edge back up and only removes the very fine edge so last much longer. If you have a properly sharpened knife and it becomes dull and you use this Sharpener do it lightly so as to remove only the smallest amount of metal.

I've found that mine can produce a RAZOR edge with a bit of practice and patience. The trick is to sharpen your edges very lightly. Do one medium-heavy swipe to cut the edge (if your knife is extremely dull, otherwise don't). Then, swipe your knife through extremely softly, by which I mean put hardly any pressure at all. In fact I simply use the weight of my knives' blades, with only my index finger on top to keep them steady.

Usually I can get my Victorinox blades literally razor-sharp with 20-30 swipes. It's just practice on getting the angle right, the swipe right, and the pressure right. I don't think it produces quite as good an edge as careful honing on a stone, but when you're say, rushing to work and you only have a few minutes to put a decent edge on your blad, it works excellently.

I bought two, when they first came out, one for me, & one for my mum, neither worked. I wouldn't waste my time or money on any kleva product.

I am a qualified chef of 28 years experience in commercial kitchens. I am currently doing a 3 month contract in a kitchen where they have a Kleva sharpener. I had a look at it and thought of it as a toy. One of my knives that I use to slice steaks was getting very dull, so I thought "what the hell", so I gave it a go.
I was very surprised, in just a few swipes, my dull knife was now like a razer.
I have tried the "Furi" 3 stage sharpeners and thought they were ok, but the Kleva sharpener is so much better. This is a true statement.

I was looking for a second one I bough my first one some years ago and I found these commentary ! It's working so good all my knifes at home have a new life !!! I have nothing to win to say this ! Just want let to know to the septic It's working great espacially for these one like me are not proffesionnel on sharpening !!

These work very well. The knife I sharpened with it was used minutes later to disembowel a door to door salesman. Now I need a telemarketer for a carpet cleaning company to call.

Actually, it does work 'substantially as advertised' it's just not as effortless as their slick infomercial makes it seem.

If you have a good knife you only need a good steel to sharpen it. Have you ever seen a butcher or a chef use anything else than a steel? Just saying.
